Process Background<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As PCBA components become smaller and more dense, the distance between parts and the stand-off height of parts, which is the gap between the part and the PCB, also become smaller. At the same time, environmental factors have a greater and greater effect on <a href=\"https:\/\/flj-pcb.com\/es\/pcb-assembly\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1919\">PCBA<\/a>. Because of this, electronic products now need a higher level of reliability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PCBA parts are changing from large to small, and from loose layout to dense layout. Under the trend of miniaturization and high density, failure problems caused by the environment are becoming more and more serious. For this reason, conformal coating has become a key process to protect PCBA reliability in use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Effect of Different Environmental Factors on PCBA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Common environmental factors such as moisture, dust, salt spray, and mold can all cause different kinds of PCBA failure. The main effects are as follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.1 Effect of Humidity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Most electronic PCB assemblies used in an open environment face a risk of corrosion. Water is the main medium that causes corrosion. Water molecules are very small, so they can pass through the molecular gaps of some polymer materials and enter the inside of the material. They can also go through pinholes in the coating and reach the metal layer below, and then cause corrosion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the air reaches a certain level of humidity, it can cause electrochemical migration on the PCB, leakage current, and signal distortion in high-frequency circuits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Steam or moisture + ion pollutants such as salts and flux activators = conductive electrolyte + stress voltage = electrochemical migration<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"552\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/flj-pcb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Effect-of-Humidity.webp\" alt=\"Effect of Humidity\" class=\"wp-image-5006\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flj-pcb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Effect-of-Humidity.webp 552w, https:\/\/flj-pcb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Effect-of-Humidity-300x272.webp 300w, https:\/\/flj-pcb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Effect-of-Humidity-13x12.webp 13w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 552px) 100vw, 552px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When relative humidity reaches 80%, a water film with a thickness of 5 to 20 molecules can form. At this point, many molecules can move freely. If carbon is present, electrochemical reactions may happen. When relative humidity reaches 60%, a water film with a thickness of 2 to 4 molecules can form on the surface of the device. If pollutants dissolve into it, chemical reactions may happen. When relative humidity is lower than 20%, almost all corrosion stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of this, moisture protection is an important part of product protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For electronic equipment, moisture exists in three forms: rainwater, condensation, and water vapor. Water is an electrolyte. It can dissolve many corrosive ions and then corrode metal. When the temperature of one area on the equipment is lower than the dew point, condensation will form on that surface. This can happen on structural parts or on the PCBA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.2 Effect of Dust<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dust exists in the air. Dust can absorb ion pollutants and then settle inside electronic equipment. This can cause failure. This is a common problem for outdoor electronic equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dust can be divided into two types. Coarse dust is irregular particles with a diameter of 2.5 to 15 microns. It usually does not cause failure or arcing, but it can affect the contact of connectors. Fine dust is irregular particles with a diameter smaller than 2.5 microns. Fine dust that falls on a PCBA board has some adhesion, so it can only be removed with an anti-static brush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The harm of dust is as follows:<br>a. When dust settles on the surface of the PCBA, it can cause electrochemical corrosion and raise the failure rate of the device.<br>b. The combination of dust, heat and humidity, and salt spray causes the most damage to PCBA. Electronic devices near the coast, in desert areas or saline-alkali land, in the rainy season south of the Huai River, and near chemical plants or mining areas have the highest failure rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of this, dust protection is an important part of product protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.3 Effect of Salt Spray<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Salt spray is formed by wave action, tides, atmospheric circulation such as monsoon, air pressure, and sunlight. It can drift inland with the wind. The concentration becomes lower as the distance from the coast increases. Usually, at 1 km from the coast, the concentration is only 1% of the value at the shore. During typhoon seasons, salt spray can drift farther inland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The harm of salt spray is as follows:<\/strong><br>a. It damages the plating layer on metal structural parts.<br>b. It speeds up electrochemical corrosion, which can cause metal wires to break and parts to fail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Similar corrosion sources are also common:<\/strong><br>a. Human sweat contains salt, urea, lactic acid, and other chemical substances. These can cause the same kind of corrosion as salt spray on electronic devices. For this reason, gloves should be worn during assembly and use, and bare hands must not touch plated surfaces.<br>b. Flux contains halogen and acidic substances. PCBA must be cleaned, and the flux residue level must be strictly controlled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of this, salt spray protection is an important part of product protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.4 Effect of Mold<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mold is a common name for filamentous fungi. It means \u201cmold-growing fungi.\u201d They often form branched and dense mycelium, but they do not form large fruiting bodies like mushrooms. In warm and humid places, many items grow visible fuzzy, cotton-like, or web-like colonies. That is mold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"498\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/flj-pcb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Effect-of-Mold.webp\" alt=\"Effect of Mold\" class=\"wp-image-5007\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flj-pcb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Effect-of-Mold.webp 498w, https:\/\/flj-pcb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Effect-of-Mold-249x300.webp 249w, https:\/\/flj-pcb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Effect-of-Mold-10x12.webp 10w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 498px) 100vw, 498px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The harm of mold is as follows:<br>a. Mold eats and grows on organic materials. This can lower the insulation performance of the material and cause damage and failure.<br>b. The metabolic products of mold are organic acids. These can affect insulation and dielectric strength, and can cause arcing problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of this, mold protection is an important part of product protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Overview of Conformal Coating Process<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on the full effect of humidity, dust, salt spray, mold, and other environmental corrosion factors, the PCBA must be isolated from the outside environment as much as possible in order to improve reliability. This is why the conformal coating process was introduced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conformal coating is also called surface coating or conformal coating. Its English name is coating or conformal coating. It is now the most common post-solder surface protection method for PCB. This process applies a thin insulating protective layer on the PCB surface. It separates sensitive electronic parts from harsh environments, greatly improves the safety and reliability of electronic products, and extends product life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conformal coating can protect circuits and parts from moisture, pollutants, corrosion, stress, shock, mechanical vibration, and thermal cycling. It can also improve mechanical strength and insulation performance. After coating, a transparent protective film forms on the PCB surface. This film can block water drops and moisture from entering, and it can prevent leakage and short-circuit failures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Key Points of Conformal Coating Process Based on <a href=\"https:\/\/datasheet.datasheetarchive.com\/originals\/crawler\/acdi.com\/4fa15157e5b81fef1873e725a900d3e8.pdf\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/datasheet.datasheetarchive.com\/originals\/crawler\/acdi.com\/4fa15157e5b81fef1873e725a900d3e8.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IPC-A-610E<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.1 Coating Area Classification<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.1.1 Areas Where Coating Is Not Allowed<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>These include areas that need electrical connection, such as gold pads, gold fingers, plated through holes, and test holes; batteries and battery holders; connectors; fuses and housings; heat sinks; jumpers; camera lenses in optical devices; potentiometers; sensors; switches without sealed structures; and all areas where coating will affect performance or normal operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.1.2 Areas That Must Be Coated<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>All solder joints, pins, and conductive parts of components must be coated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.1.3 Optional Coating Areas<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>These areas have no clear mandatory coating requirement. They can be coated based on product needs and customer standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.2 Coating Thickness Standard and Test Method<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>El espesor del recubrimiento debe medirse en una superficie plana, sin recubrimiento y curada del conjunto de circuito impreso. Tambi\u00e9n puede medirse en una placa complementaria fabricada durante el mismo proceso que el conjunto. La placa complementaria puede estar fabricada con el mismo material que la PCB, o bien con un material no poroso, como metal o vidrio. La medici\u00f3n del espesor de la pel\u00edcula h\u00fameda tambi\u00e9n puede utilizarse como m\u00e9todo opcional para comprobar el espesor del recubrimiento. En este caso, debe conocerse de antemano la relaci\u00f3n de conversi\u00f3n entre la pel\u00edcula seca y la h\u00fameda, y deben conservarse los registros correspondientes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>M\u00e9todos de ensayo del espesor:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Medici\u00f3n del espesor de la pel\u00edcula seca: se puede utilizar un micr\u00f3metro, siguiendo la norma IPC-CC-830B. Tambi\u00e9n se puede utilizar un medidor de espesor de pel\u00edcula seca ferroso.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medici\u00f3n del espesor de la pel\u00edcula h\u00fameda: utilice un medidor de espesor de pel\u00edcula h\u00fameda para medir dicho espesor y, a continuaci\u00f3n, convi\u00e9rtalo en el espesor real de la pel\u00edcula seca bas\u00e1ndose en la proporci\u00f3n de contenido en s\u00f3lidos del material de recubrimiento.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.3 Requisitos de resoluci\u00f3n de los bordes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Definici\u00f3n: el borde de una l\u00ednea pulverizada por una v\u00e1lvula de pulverizaci\u00f3n normal no puede ser perfectamente recto. Siempre habr\u00e1 peque\u00f1as irregularidades. La anchura de estas irregularidades se denomina \u00abresoluci\u00f3n del borde\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Requisito del proceso: cuanto menor sea el valor de la resoluci\u00f3n de los bordes, mayor ser\u00e1 la precisi\u00f3n del recubrimiento. No existe una norma fija \u00fanica; solo es necesario que se cumpla con los requisitos espec\u00edficos del cliente.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.4 Requisito de uniformidad<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>El recubrimiento conformado debe formar una pel\u00edcula completa sobre la superficie del producto. La pel\u00edcula debe tener un espesor uniforme, ser lisa y transparente. La cobertura del recubrimiento debe ser uniforme en todo el producto. Tras el recubrimiento, la superficie del producto no debe presentar grietas, separaci\u00f3n de capas, efecto piel de naranja, contaminaci\u00f3n, efecto capilar, burbujas ni otros defectos de proceso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Proceso completo de recubrimiento conformable y m\u00e9todos principales<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.1 Preparaci\u00f3n previa<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Prepara el producto PCBA, el material de recubrimiento conformado y el resto de materiales auxiliares. Identifica las zonas que requieren protecci\u00f3n mediante enmascaramiento local. Confirma y fija todos los detalles clave del proceso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.2 Proceso de limpieza<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>La limpieza debe realizarse lo antes posible una vez finalizada la soldadura de la placa de circuito impreso (PCBA). Esto ayuda a evitar que los residuos de soldadura se vuelvan dif\u00edciles de eliminar una vez que se hayan endurecido. En primer lugar, hay que determinar si el contaminante es polar o no polar y, a continuaci\u00f3n, elegir el agente de limpieza adecuado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Si se utiliza un producto de limpieza a base de alcohol, la zona de trabajo debe estar bien ventilada. Tras la limpieza, es imprescindible secar bien la pieza, para que los restos de disolvente no provoquen una explosi\u00f3n en el horno al evaporarse. Si se utiliza un proceso de lavado con agua, utilice un l\u00edquido de limpieza emulsionado ligeramente alcalino para eliminar los residuos de fundente y, a continuaci\u00f3n, aclare bien con agua pura. Aseg\u00farese de que se cumpla el est\u00e1ndar de calidad de limpieza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.3 Proceso de protecci\u00f3n mediante enmascaramiento<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Cuando no se utilicen equipos de recubrimiento selectivo, las zonas que no se vayan a recubrir deben enmascararse antes de aplicar el recubrimiento. Utilice cinta adhesiva que no deje residuos ni transfiera pegamento. En el caso de los componentes de circuitos integrados, se debe utilizar primero cinta de papel antiest\u00e1tica. Todos los componentes deben enmascararse y protegerse siguiendo estrictamente las indicaciones del plano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.4 Proceso de deshumidificaci\u00f3n<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Tras la limpieza y el enmascaramiento, la placa de circuito impreso ensamblada (PCBA) debe someterse a un precalentamiento y a un proceso de deshumidificaci\u00f3n antes del recubrimiento. En funci\u00f3n de la temperatura m\u00e1xima que pueda soportar la PCBA, se debe elegir la temperatura de precalentamiento y el tiempo de mantenimiento adecuados. De este modo, se elimina por completo la humedad de la placa y del interior de los componentes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.5 Principales m\u00e9todos de recubrimiento<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>El proceso de recubrimiento conformado puede elegirse de forma flexible en funci\u00f3n del nivel de protecci\u00f3n del PCBA, el equipo de producci\u00f3n y la configuraci\u00f3n t\u00e9cnica. Los principales m\u00e9todos son los cuatro siguientes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.5.1 Aplicaci\u00f3n manual con brocha<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>El recubrimiento con pincel tiene un amplio abanico de aplicaciones. Es especialmente adecuado para la producci\u00f3n de lotes peque\u00f1os, productos con estructuras PCBA complejas y densas, y productos que requieren una protecci\u00f3n de enmascaramiento rigurosa. Ofrece un gran control manual y permite evitar con gran precisi\u00f3n las zonas sin recubrimiento, lo que evita la contaminaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"471\" src=\"https:\/\/flj-pcb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Manual-Brush-Coating.webp\" alt=\"Manual Brush Coating\" class=\"wp-image-5005\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flj-pcb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Manual-Brush-Coating.webp 600w, https:\/\/flj-pcb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Manual-Brush-Coating-300x236.webp 300w, https:\/\/flj-pcb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Manual-Brush-Coating-15x12.webp 15w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Este proceso utiliza muy poco material de recubrimiento, por lo que resulta adecuado para recubrimientos de dos componentes de alto coste. Requiere un alto nivel de destreza por parte del operario. Antes de comenzar el trabajo, el operario debe comprender los requisitos de recubrimiento indicados en el plano, identificar los diferentes componentes, conocer claramente las zonas que no deben recubrirse y realizar marcas que sean f\u00e1ciles de ver. Durante todo el proceso de trabajo, no se deben tocar con las manos desnudas las piezas impresas que se van a ensamblar, para evitar as\u00ed la contaminaci\u00f3n secundaria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.5.2 Recubrimiento manual por inmersi\u00f3n<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>El recubrimiento por inmersi\u00f3n permite formar una capa uniforme, continua y completa. El resultado general del recubrimiento es muy bueno. Sin embargo, no es adecuado para productos PCBA que contengan condensadores ajustables, n\u00facleos magn\u00e9ticos ajustables, potenci\u00f3metros, n\u00facleos magn\u00e9ticos en forma de copa o piezas con un sellado deficiente.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Los par\u00e1metros clave del proceso de recubrimiento por inmersi\u00f3n son: ajustar con precisi\u00f3n la viscosidad del recubrimiento conformado; controlar estrictamente la velocidad de elevaci\u00f3n de la placa de circuito impreso ensamblada (PCBA); la velocidad de elevaci\u00f3n no debe superar 1 metro por segundo, para evitar que se formen burbujas en el recubrimiento.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.5.3 Recubrimiento por pulverizaci\u00f3n manual<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Este m\u00e9todo es adecuado para productos con estructuras complejas, gran variedad de tipos y lotes de peque\u00f1o tama\u00f1o, en los que no es posible la producci\u00f3n en serie mediante equipos autom\u00e1ticos. Permite cubrir muy bien las esquinas especiales y las zonas con huecos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Notas de trabajo: la niebla de pulverizaci\u00f3n puede contaminar f\u00e1cilmente las zonas sin recubrimiento, como las piezas enchufables de las placas de circuito impreso, los z\u00f3calos de circuitos integrados, los contactos de precisi\u00f3n y las zonas de puesta a tierra. Por lo tanto, es necesario aplicar una protecci\u00f3n de enmascaramiento antes de la pulverizaci\u00f3n. Los operarios no deben tocar los conectores impresos con las manos desnudas, para evitar que se ensucie la superficie de contacto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.5.4 Recubrimiento por pulverizaci\u00f3n autom\u00e1tica<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Este m\u00e9todo suele utilizar equipos de recubrimiento autom\u00e1tico selectivo. Es adecuado para la producci\u00f3n estandarizada a gran escala. Presenta las ventajas de una buena uniformidad del recubrimiento, una alta precisi\u00f3n y una menor contaminaci\u00f3n medioambiental. A medida que la industria se moderniza, los costes laborales aumentan y la normativa medioambiental se vuelve m\u00e1s estricta, los equipos de pulverizaci\u00f3n autom\u00e1tica est\u00e1n sustituyendo poco a poco al recubrimiento manual tradicional.
