When asked “What is the material used in your PCB?” Most PCB suppliers will answer FR4, of course, this is only based on some of our commonly used applications. Such an answer may not satisfy all customers. Next, we will have a comprehensive introduction to PCB substrates. The plate we say usually refers to the substrate, which is actually composed of copper foil and adhesive sheet (for the convenience of introduction, we temporarily use P sheet, Prepreg to represent), and copper foil and P sheet are based on different applications. There are many categories
There are many substrates used for PCB, there are two main categories: organic and inorganic. Organic substrates are made of reinforcing materials such as glass fiber cloth, which are also called copper-clad laminates, and inorganic substrates are mainly ceramic plates and enamel-clad steel substrates.
PCB boards are divided into rigid circuit boards, flexible circuit boards and rigid-flex combined circuit boards according to the rigidity and flexibility of the dielectric materials used to make the substrate. Rigid circuit board refers to a printed circuit board that is pressed with copper foil on the surface of the substrate that is not easy to bend; it requires flatness, has a certain mechanical strength, and can play a supporting role. Flexible circuit board refers to a printed circuit board laminated with copper foil on the surface of a flexible substrate; it has good heat dissipation and is ultra-thin, and can be bent, folded, rolled, and can be moved and stretched arbitrarily in three-dimensional space. Rigid-flex circuit board is a combination of rigid board and flexible board, which is mainly used for the electrical connection between rigid board and flexible board.
PCB boards are divided into single-sided, double-sided and multi-layer boards according to the number of layers of copper cladding. Single-panel refers to a printed circuit board with only one side covered with conductive patterns on the surface of the insulating substrate. Double-sided refers to a printed circuit board with conductive patterns covered on both sides of the insulating substrate. A multi-layer board refers to a printed circuit board in which one layer of copper foil and one insulating substrate are alternately bonded. The electrical interconnection between the layers is realized by pads, through holes, blind holes and buried holes. Most of the multi-layer boards are 4-8 layers of structure, the current international level can achieve nearly 100 layers.
