Their copper regions serve the intended supply networks, with plane partitions coordinated with nearby signal routes. The outer signals still sit beside ground, as do L3 and L6 on one side. Those inner signals also face power copper on the other side, so the dielectric spacing, supply regions and nearby conductors all contribute to their electrical environment. The two central power layers also couple to each other; their spacing and rail arrangement are part of this choice.

Turn the allocation into a fabricated structure

The copper roles are only one part of the build. Its pressed thickness depends on the material construction, resin and copper pattern. Electrical roles do not establish material thickness or mechanical balance by themselves. Tg describes a transition in the resin system; it is not a complete high-speed or operating-temperature specification.

Select the exact grade and its relevant property data rather than relying on a material-family name alone. A short local connection and a longer connector-to-connector path may justify different material expenditure. Hybrid builds also bring bonding and thermal-expansion compatibility into the choice.

Copper & mechanics
Finished thickness and copper

The overall thickness sets mechanical fit, while local dielectric gaps establish the spacing between signal conductors and their references. A board specified only as eight layers at a given total thickness still leaves those local relationships undefined.

Finished copper thickness, conductor width, etched shape and differential-pair spacing participate in the impedance geometry. Heavier copper also changes current distribution and fabrication requirements. Inner and outer copper should be identified separately because the external conductors are processed with the plated board.

Exposed copper finish
Surface finish and assembly interface

ENIG, OSP and HASL are examples of solderable finishes. Selection considers the pad structure, assembly process and product requirements. Contact fingers can need a different deposit from nearby solder pads, so selective finish areas belong in the fabrication drawing.

The order combines these selections into a fabricated product: a named laminate construction, defined internal and external copper, and the finish required at each exposed feature. An untreated opening can draw solder away during assembly. Filling, planarization and copper capping provide a pad surface suitable for the intended assembly process.

In a resin-filled plated via, the hole-wall copper carries the electrical connection. The resin fills the interior, and the copper cap forms the surface above it. Copper-filled microvias use a different construction and process. The required span, hole geometry and subsequent connections determine which approach fits the design.

Backdrill concept. Controlled depth preserves the required connected span.

Control the transition as well as the trace

A through via can extend beyond the layer where the signal leaves its barrel. That unused portion is a stub. For a suitable high-speed design, backdrilling removes part of the unused barrel while preserving the connection that the circuit needs. Removal depth and clearance must leave the intended connection intact. The hole drawing distinguishes the connected span from the section to remove, rather than applying the same depth to every via.

Backdrilling and filling solve different problems. One controls the remaining barrel; the other establishes a filled structure or pad surface. Signal transitions also need a suitable return path when their reference changes. A filled hole or a short stub does not by itself establish that return connection.

An eight-layer board can use conventional mechanically drilled through vias. HDI is an interconnect choice for the actual density and escape requirement, rather than a consequence of the number eight.

Local construction illustrations, not complete eight-layer cross-sections. This is the opportunity to find circuit-pattern defects before the layers are enclosed. Layer registration then connects the stackup drawing to the actual position of pads, holes and copper through the board.

After hole processing, inspection focuses on the manufactured connection: the plated wall, filled region and copper cap where specified. Cross-sections reveal selected internal dimensions and interfaces in the prepared sample. These observations complement the dimensional checks of the finished outline and hole locations.

Electrical continuity and isolation testing examines the board’s connection network.
