THE MATERIAL BEHIND THE CIRCUIT
PTFE laminates:
resin, reinforcement and copper
PTFE-based circuit laminates provide low dielectric loss for RF transmission structures. Reinforcement and fillers give each grade its dielectric, thermal and mechanical characteristics. Those properties work with the conductor geometry and reference-plane spacing to define the circuit’s electrical construction.
The PTFE grades within Rogers PCB materials και Taconic material families include several composite structures:
| Laminate structure | Selected examples | What distinguishes the construction |
|---|---|---|
| Glass microfibers in PTFE | RT/duroid 5880 | A low-Dk composite for antenna and microwave structures, with a soft laminate response to carry through handling and machining. |
| Woven-glass reinforcement in PTFE | TLY-5 | A light glass fabric supports the dielectric; its reinforced construction remains part of the board’s dimensional response. |
| Ceramic-filled PTFE | RO3003; TSM-DS3b | Ceramic filler adjusts the dielectric and thermomechanical properties. The grade also defines whether glass reinforcement is present. |
These are construction examples, not mutually exclusive ingredient lists. PTFE is often called Teflon in PCB enquiries; the board specification identifies the actual laminate manufacturer, grade, thickness and copper foil.
PTFE PCB FABRICATION
Manufacturing the
PTFE circuit board
A PTFE board brings together different interfaces: copper foil on a laminate face, deposited copper along a drilled wall, and bonding material between patterned cores. FLJ forms each of these into the finished circuit, using the preparation and fabrication route suited to that interface.
Foil becomes
RF geometry
Copper cladding arrives bonded to the laminate. Imaging and etching turn it into transmission lines, pads, ground regions and the spaces between them. Panels are supported during handling and preparation so that bending, stretching or aggressive brushing does not disturb the dielectric or the surface needed for later bonding.
As copper is removed, the laminate can change dimensions. Construction-specific artwork compensation keeps the patterned features in position for drilling and registration. Etch compensation addresses the conductor’s shape; plating can then add to the outer copper thickness. The finished trace and gap, rather than the starting foil alone, are the geometry carried into the RF board.
Optical inspection examines the patterned copper while the features are accessible. For inner layers, this happens before the next bonding operation encloses them.
A surface prepared
for copper
Unlike the copper-clad face, a drilled dielectric wall starts without a continuous conductor. The tool cuts through copper, PTFE and any reinforcement or bonding layers. Cutting heat can soften PTFE, while debris carried along the bore can cover internal copper contacts. Tool condition, chip removal and support at entry and exit help preserve the hole and its exposed interfaces.
We remove residues that obstruct the intended contacts and prepare the dielectric for adhesion. PTFE’s chemically unreactive surface also receives a treatment suited to metal adhesion. Where thermoset bonding resin is present, its desmear treatment addresses a different material from PTFE activation. The selected sequence prepares the exposed wall and copper contacts for metallization.
Conductive coverage provides a starting layer for electroplating. Copper then builds along the bore to form the plated barrel and its connections to the designated layers. A microsection reveals the deposited wall and the copper junctions at the cut; bare-board electrical testing checks continuity within nets and isolation between them.

Joining
patterned cores
Bonding takes place across the patterned faces. For a πολυστρωματικό PCB, FLJ registers the cores with compatible bonding plies and outer copper. The bonding material must fill around the copper relief and join the stack. Copper distribution, available resin and the material’s pressing cycle work together to establish the bond and the cured dielectric spacing.
An etched PTFE core can retain a surface texture from the original foil. Preserving that texture contributes to the selected bonding route. Hole-wall preparation and interlayer bonding therefore have different surface objectives; the same aggressive treatment is not applied indiscriminately to both.
The bonded structure may use PTFE RF cores throughout, or combine specialty cores with supporting layers in a compatible hybrid. Its finished dielectric spacing includes the bonding layers as well as the core material. That complete buildup carries the RF geometry into the manufactured board.
Surfaces and
mechanical completion
Specified solder-mask openings and surface-finish areas are carried into the outer-layer work. Routing creates the outline, cutouts and panel features for the next assembly step. Dimensional inspection checks the completed form; controlled-impedance orders also use the specified representative coupons and measurement method.

CIRCUIT BOARDS IN WORKING HARDWARE
PTFE boards in RF products
Microwave modules
Etched line sections, pads and reference copper form the RF part of a microwave module. The board also provides component connections and a mechanical outline that fits the surrounding hardware. FLJ carries these electrical and assembly features into the fabricated circuit.
Radar and sensing hardware
Radar front ends bring RF transmission structures together with bias, control and component interconnections. PTFE multilayer and compatible hybrid constructions provide options for integrating these functions within the board and its mounting interfaces.
Hardware references illustrate the product categories; their laminate grades and any relationship to FLJ are not implied.
FLJ supplies PTFE prototype boards and production batches as individual circuits or assembly panels. For populated-board supply, Συναρμολόγηση PCB combines fabrication with component sourcing, placement and soldering, followed by the inspection and testing defined for the assembly.
The quotation reflects the work behind the finished board. Sheet format and panel utilization affect laminate consumption; holes, bonding construction and verification add manufacturing operations. Repeat production retains the released material, foil, bond system and circuit revision so that the next batch follows the same construction.
